I want to share everything about Need for Speed: Payback in simple words. This game is not just about racing; it features a full story, characters, action-packed missions, and extensive car customization options. Some things I enjoyed, but others were honestly disappointing. Here are some results that I felt after playing this game.
The driving style is fully arcade, not realistic. It’s very easy to drift and do stunts, and off-road racing feels smooth. I had the most fun when driving on dirt or desert roads.
But when I was driving fast, it didn’t feel fast. Even at 150 km/h, the game didn’t give me that exciting “speed” feeling. Older games like Hot Pursuit made me feel the rush. This one didn’t. Also, sometimes it felt like the game was almost driving by itself, especially in races with a lot of rubber banding (where AI cars magically catch up no matter how far ahead I was).
Another big letdown was the police. In old Need for Speed games, I would often randomly encounter cops and initiate high-speed chases. In Payback, police only appear in story missions. There’s no free-roam police chase at all.
The map looks good with deserts, mountains, and city streets. However, after exploring for a while, it felt somewhat empty. I found myself using fast travel more than actually driving around. In just a few hours, I had already seen almost everything.
The off-road areas were the best part. I enjoyed jumping hills, sliding through dirt paths, and smashing fences. However, since most cars are locked to a specific race type (such as drift or off-road), I couldn’t use the exact vehicle for everything, which became annoying.
Story and Characters
The game takes place in Fortune Valley. It is a mix of Las Vegas, deserts, forests, and city streets. I played Tyler Morgan, a street racer who got betrayed during a car heist. The person who turned on him was Lina Navarro, and she now works with a group called The House, a rich and powerful gang that controls all races.
Tyler’s team includes Jess and Mac. Jess is a getaway driver, cool and tough. Mac loves off-road and drift races and always brings fun energy. Together, we worked to beat The House, win back our name, and take part in the biggest race called The Outlaw’s Rush.
I liked the idea of the story, and some missions felt intense, like scenes from a movie.
Car Customization and Missions
Customizing cars is intense. I can change body parts, add lights, modify nitrous colors, adjust change tire smoke, and even alter change wheel angles. That part was fun. But to unlock these parts, I had to complete specific challenges. I couldn’t just buy or earn them naturally. It felt like a grind.
Upgrading the car’s performance wasn’t fun at all. Instead of buying standard parts, the game gives you Speed Cards. These are random cards you earn after races, and they improve things like engine, nitrous, and brakes. But everything is random. If I needed one good upgrade, I had to keep racing or gambling with trade-ins to get it.
There are five main chapters in the story. In each one, I had to beat different racing crews. They were like mini-bosses. After winning several events, I faced the crew leader and moved on to the next chapter.
I also unlocked special missions that felt like Fast & Furious. These missions had cutscenes, character switching, and huge set-piece moments. The first one was exciting; I was in a Koenigsegg, racing and doing a heist. However, most of the incredible moments were in cutscenes, not gameplay.
There were additional activities to do, such as jumps, speed traps, drift zones, and roaming racers.
The microtransactionspart annoyed me. The whole game is filled with loot boxes (called shipments) and random upgrades. Even though I could earn them by playing, everything felt designed to encourage players to spend real money. The car progression was based on chance. If I didn’t get the part I wanted, I had to keep grinding or use tokens to spin again.
